What are some of the reasons your dad would need overnight care? It’s often essential in the latter stages of Alzheimer’s disease or after a stroke. Cancer, pneumonia, and poor mobility are other reasons your dad needs someone with him at all hours. You’ve talked to your family about your dad’s care needs, and you’re all trying to figure things out. What are your choices when overnight care is essential? Find out more here about what he may need and how 24-hour home care can help.

Family Members Take Different Shifts

One option is for all siblings and any other family member with the time and interest to create a schedule of care. You work second shift, so you can help your dad in the mornings. Your brother is a first-shift worker, so he can take dinner and bedtime shifts. But, what about overnight? Who is available and awake during those hours?

As tempting as it is to make sure that your dad has someone with him at all hours, you can’t stress yourself over his care. Other issues arise if someone picks up a virus, as they need to stay away from your dad’s home until they’re healthy again. Make sure as you do this that no one is being overloaded.

You Move Your Dad For Now

You could move your dad temporarily to a nursing home. It’s an option, but it may not be an option that helps him get the rest he needs. Nursing homes can be noisy, and they can have that antiseptic hospital smell that doesn’t evoke feelings of home.

While he’s out of his home, however, someone needs to keep checking in to make sure his HVAC system is working. He needs his mail brought inside, and his plants need watering.

Arrange 24-Hour Home Care Services

The best option is to arrange 24-hour home care. A team of caregivers works in shifts to make sure someone is with your dad at all hours. During a caregiver’s shift, they’re awake and ready to do whatever your dad needs. If he wakes at 2 a.m. and needs a drink, his caregiver gets it.

If he’s dealing with pain after a fall, his caregiver is keeping track of his last dose of Advil or Tylenol. That caregiver tells him when he’s allowed to have the next dose. If a shift change happens between doses, his caregivers share notes to ensure everyone knows the pertinent information.

Caregivers can clean his home, cook meals, schedule appointments, and do the laundry. Your dad is able to rest or work on regaining strength knowing his home is clean and organized.

Sit down and have a conversation with your family about the care your dad needs. Ask his doctors for input. Once you have a clear idea of what he needs for care, talk to a 24-hour home care specialist to discuss the cost of 24-hour home care.
