So many family caregivers find themselves exhausted at the end of the day and don’t see a way to make any changes. When they pour all of their time and energy into someone else’s needs, it can be really difficult to remember that they have needs, too. Caregiver burnout often sneaks up on family caregivers, but there are some subtle signs that it’s time to consider respite care.

Frequent Illnesses

Getting sick more often than usual, even with small complaints like an upset stomach or a headache, can be a sign that the family caregiver’s body and immune system are struggling. Stress and exhaustion take a big toll on physical wellness, leaving family caregivers more vulnerable to illnesses. If they’re finding themselves constantly recovering from something, it’s probably time for a break.

Mood Swings

Burnout affects emotional wellness as well as physical well-being. Family caregivers might feel fine one minute and overwhelmed to the point of fury the next. They can experience increased irritability, sadness, and even guilt. These emotional ups and downs can feel impossible to navigate, especially if they’re not typical. Time away offers emotional space and the chance to reframe what’s going on.

Perpetual Fatigue

If family caregivers constantly feel tired, even after they get a good night’s sleep, they are probably already struggling with burnout. Physical and emotional fatigue make everyday tasks feel more difficult and heavier to manage. The mental fatigue of making decisions constantly just adds more weight. Exhaustion means it’s time to consider delegating tasks, possibly to home care providers.

Isolation

Family caregivers often don’t realize that they might be withdrawing more and more from the people they love. It’s much more difficult as a family caregiver to keep up with phone calls, meetups, and other events, simply because of time and energy constraints. Respite care offers family caregivers a chance to spend time with other people, even just for a few hours.

Trouble Focusing and Thinking

Trouble thinking, solving problems, and maintaining focus are all signs of stress as well. Family caregivers usually have to make a lot of decisions regarding caring for the seniors they love. In the beginning, these decisions might not be as exhausting, but over time, they take a heavy toll. Letting someone else be in charge for a little while can relieve some of that burden.

Difficulty with Self-care

Family caregivers might know an awful lot about how much sleep the seniors they love are getting, what they’re eating, and every other detail about their lives. But they might have gone a few days without a shower themselves or they ate a snack while standing over the sink instead of eating a balanced meal. Neglecting self-care in favor of caring for someone else is not sustainable and can quickly lead to burnout.

Burnout isn’t a sign of failure. It just means that family caregivers have been pouring out too much of their own time and energy without replenishing it. Respite care allows them to take a step back, rest, reset, and come back refreshed and ready to go.
