As seniors get older they may have trouble with personal care tasks like showering and washing their hair. And seniors who have been in the hospital because of a medical event or a fall may need to have their hair washed immediately after they are released but need help to do it. Personal care at home for seniors can be a big help assisting seniors with hygiene tasks. Being clean and well-groomed is important for making seniors feel better and maintaining their self confidence and mental health. With personal care at home seniors will be able to get the help with tasks like washing their hair. Some of the things that seniors can do to make hair washing easier are:

Use Only A Tiny Bit of Shampoo

Seniors don’t typically have a lot of hair, and it doesn’t take a lot of shampoo to get their hair clean. A tiny bit of high-quality shampoo will get the job done without irritating the senior’s scalp or causing dry skin on their head. It’s also a good idea to use baby shampoo that is gentle and unscented so that there’s no perfumes or dyes in the shampoo that could be irritating.

Try An Inflatable Shampoo Basin

When shampooing a senior’s head it can be difficult to do if the senior is tall because the caregiver either needs to stand on something or the senior needs to stoop down. An inflatable shampoo basin makes the process easier because the senior can sit naturally in a safety shower chair and the caregiver can easily shampoo and rinse the senior’s hair comfortably. Inflatable shampoo basins can also make it easy to wash a senior’s hair in bed, on the couch, or elsewhere if they can’t get to the shower.

Hair Washing Caps Can Make Hair Washing Easier

Seniors who are recovering from a hospital stay or who are ill and can’t get out of bed can use hair washing caps to shampoo their hair. Hair washing caps look like shower caps but they have dry shampoo in them that doesn’t need to be rinsed. Put the shower camp on and massage the dry shampoo through the senior’s hair. When the cap comes off their hair will be clean and shiny and dry. It takes a lot of the mess and difficulty out of trying to shampoo a senior’s hair if they are unable to get out of bed.

A Hand Held Shower Head Makes Rinsing Easier

Seniors should have hand held shower heads on their shower fixtures for many reasons. It’s much easier for a caregiver to help a senior shower if they can use a hand held shower head to direct the water exactly where they need it to go. And it also makes it much easier and safer for seniors to rinse shampoo and conditioner out of their hair. Shampoo and conditioner can make the shower floor very slippery. With a hand held shower head a caregiver can rise the shampoo and then the conditioner while the seniors is comfortably sitting in the shower. Then they can rinse the shower floor to make sure all the slippery soap and conditioner is gone before the senior stands up.
