Korean War veterans are people who served in combat during the recognized wartime era between 1950 and 1955. Today, these senior veterans live normal lives quite removed from the long-ago conflict in Korea. July 27 is National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day, and it’s an excellent time for communities across the country to honor Korean War vets.

If your elderly parent is a Korean War veteran, you can certainly assist them in observing this solemn and important day in their lives. Don’t forget to include family members, friends, home care providers and neighbors as appropriate.

What is National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day?

The Korean War, often called “The Forgotten War” lasted from 1950 to 1953. National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day is held every July 27th to recognize the day that the peace treaty was signed that triggered a cease fire. In actuality, there were two more years of uneasy peace and no official end to the war.

More than 5.7 million people were on active duty during the war era, and 37,000 U.S. service men and women lost their lives in the Korean conflict. Today, there are still more than 2.25 million Korean war veterans alive. The average age of a Korean War veteran is 69. While the majority of veterans are men, there were hundreds of thousands of women that also served during the war. Of course, there are also millions of people that did not serve themselves but are friends or family with Korean War veterans.

Helping Elderly Relatives Observe National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day

If your aging relative wishes to observe National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day, they are going to need some assistance from you, other family members, friends and home care providers. The first step is to see what observances are taking place in your own community. Many cities have war memorials and hold services on this national day of observation.

Other common activities on this day include wreath-laying ceremonies, name recognition ceremonies or a veteran’s parade. These and similar events honor and thank Korean War veterans for their service. It can be a very moving experience for family members and home care providers to attend with an elderly veteran that they take care of.

Korean War veterans can also be honored in many other ways, even if there is no nearby community event. Family caregivers, friends, and home care providers can put up an American flag in the yard or on the house, visit another veteran’s grave, take flowers to a nearby veteran’s memorial or observing a moment of silence together. It’s also a good opportunity for the elderly person to share stories about their time in the service and recording or writing them for posterity. It’s important for all family members, especially children, to know about Korean War veterans in their own family.

When it comes to observing National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day, many seniors look for ways to commemorate the sacrifices that they and others made for the country. You, family members, friends and home care providers can provide them with the support they need to do so.
